When someone says that they want peace, it’s worth asking if perhaps they actually mean they want control. As humans, we often want a sense of control, an ability to enact our will on the environment and people around us. Violence is one of the most expedient ways to establish this control. However, to reject violence and embrace peace is to surrender expedient control and invite the unknown. In this mystery lies a delicate togetherness that offers more security than violence can create. The question for communities who want peace then becomes; are we brave enough to forego control and violence?
